What patellar luxation is
The patella should track within the trochlear groove during movement. Medial or lateral displacement can range from subtle intermittent episodes to persistent instability associated with limb deformity.
What should be assessed
Assessment considers direction and grade of luxation, limb alignment, rotation, femoral and tibial conformation, range of motion, pain and functional impact. Radiographs may complement the examination and selected cases may require further imaging for planning.
When treatment is considered
Not every patellar luxation requires the same approach. Episode frequency, discomfort, progression, degree of deformity, age and activity influence the choice between clinical follow-up and surgical correction.

Radiography may complement orthopedic investigation when indicated. Interpretation depends on the views obtained, the patient examination and the clinical question.
